This project aims to document the effect of present and novel nitrification inhibitors (NI) on the direct emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions as well as emissions of ammonia (NH3) from grain cropping systems. This is achieved by observations deploying high time-resolution automated chamber systems combined with campaign based manual observations. This will further allow us to establish the validity of previous manual-based field N2O trials. Secondly, in the project we deploy nitrogen isotope tracer (15N) to investigate if emitted N2O and NH3 are directly derived from fertilizer or ambient soil nitrogen sources. Leaching of nitrate-N is furthermore included in the study as this flow of nitrogen constitutes a source to indirect N2O emissions. The overall goal of the project is to establish new knowledge to (I) sustain agricultural climate change mitigation and (II) support future, national greenhouse gas inventories.
