The ENHANCE project addresses one of the most pressing global challenges: the intersection of climate change and zoonotic diseases. It operates in the transboundary regions of Kenya and Tanzania, both of which have extensive development cooperation with Denmark. The project examines the intricate connections between human, livestock, and wildlife health under the impacts of changing climate conditions. With droughts intensifying and rainfall patterns shifting, these changes create favorable conditions for zoonotic pathogens to survive and spread, posing risks to livelihoods, public health, and ecosystems. Finally, with a lens on social conflicts, data will be provided which can help the two countries to better manage conflicts related to water scarcity.
The research is divided into 4 interrelated work packages that emphasize the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health. It will investigate how climate-related factors contribute to the emergence and spread of zoonotic diseases. In addition, the project aims to provide evidence-based solutions to improve prevention, preparedness, and response efforts. By examining the impact of zoonoses on rural communities, it also considers policy implications and stakeholder perspectives in addressing these challenges.
As a key partner in the ENHANCE project, Land-CRAFT brings expertise in climate adaptation and agro-environmental solutions. Our involvement ensures that cutting-edge science is translated into solutions that benefit both local communities and broader environmental sustainability goals.
This is a 5 year project from October 2023 to September 2028; with the collaborative efforts of partners from the following countries:
