KlimaKalk

Improved inventories of liming effects on net greenhouse gas emissions and nitrate leaching

The purpose of KlimaKalk is to improve farm-scale inventories of targeted liming as a climate and environment effective management option to reduce net agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nitrogen (N) losses, including the effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks.

The aim is to develop a Tier 2 accounting procedure and strategic road map for liming, which is an operational farm level activity, to support the green transition of Danish agriculture.

KlimaKalk aims to document the relationship between targeted liming and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE), and nitrate (NO3-) leaching from Danish agricultural soils. The project further aims to improve the scientific documentation for carbon dioxide (CO2) emission factors (EFs) for agricultural lime in Danish soils, where the current Tier 1 approach by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reflects a knowledge gap and represents a barrier for implementation of liming as an efficient GHG mitigation measure. The goal is thus to develop the scientific and technical background for accounting procedures, thereby enabling the use of targeted liming as an accountable management option at farm-scale.
